Cisco Joins CalRHIO Effort to Build Country’s
Largest Statewide Health Information Exchange

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., January 7, 2008 - CalRHIO announced today that Cisco has agreed in principle to participate with its technology partners, Medicity, Inc., and Perot Systems Corporation, in building the country’s largest statewide health information exchange service. Cisco joins HP, which has also signed on to the collaborative effort.

“Cisco recognized early on the importance of transforming the health care system through electronic health records and information sharing,” said Nick Augustinos, Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group Director. “Through collaboration with CalRHIO and other technology leaders, we believe California will lead the nation in creating a statewide health information exchange system that not only supports clinicians, but also helps consumers make better health care choices.”

Every day in California, an estimated 50,000 or more patients experience suboptimal care solely because important medical information is missing at the point of care. CalRHIO’s goal is to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care by offering clinicians and patients throughout California secure electronic access to patient medical records, where and when they are needed.

Cisco will participate in strategy development, infrastructure design and deployment, and implementation services for the not-for-profit CalRHIO Health Information Exchange (HIE) Utility Service, leveraging its industry relationships and global experience in health information systems. As a leading California employer, Cisco will encourage other companies to participate in this important initiative.

“Cisco leaders have been involved with CalRHIO from the beginning, as members of our early working groups,” said Don Holmquest, MD, CalRHIO president and CEO. “Their vision and expertise have been invaluable. We are delighted to have Cisco’s continuing support and collaboration in the next phase of our development.”

Both HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger have called for adoption of electronic medical records over the next several years to improve the quality and safety of health care, as well as decrease costs. The CalRHIO HIE Utility Service supports the Governor’s Executive Order and will enable electronic medical records to be shared confidentially among providers across California and through the National Health Information Network, currently under development by HHS.
